amazing glutathione
What is glutathione?
Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide consisting of glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine containing y-amide bonds and sulfhydryl groups, which is present in almost every cell of the body.
antioxidation
1. Eliminate free radicals
The cysteine residue in glutathione molecule has active sulfhydryl group (-SH), which is easily dehydrogenated by oxidation.
Under the action of glutathione peroxidase, glutathione is able to reduce hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) in the body to water (H₂O), while itself is oxidized to oxidized glutathione (GSSG).
Under the catalysis of glutathione reductase, GSSG can accept hydrogen reduction to glutathione, thereby continuously scavenging free radicals and protecting cells from oxidative damage.
2. Protect proteins and enzymes
Glutathione can protect the sulfhydryl groups in many proteins and enzymes from oxidation and inactivation, ensuring the normal structure and function of these biological macromolecules, and is conducive to maintaining the normal physiological function of cells.
3. Maintain stability of erythrocyte membrane
Human red blood cells contain a lot of glutathione, reduced glutathione can directly combine with oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide to produce water and oxidized glutathione, and can also reduce methemoglobin to hemoglobin to prevent hemolysis.
Integrated detoxification
1. Binding with poisons
The active group of glutathione, sulfhydryl (often abbreviated as G-SH), is easily combined with certain drugs (such as paracetamol) and toxins (such as free radicals, iodoacetic acid, mustard gas, lead, mercury, arsenic and other heavy metals).
This binding effect helps to convert harmful substances into harmless or less toxic forms, thus playing a detoxification effect.
2. Participate in biotransformation
Glutathione (especially glutathione in liver cells) can participate in biotransformation, transforming harmful poisons into harmless substances in the body, and promoting their excretion.
Other functions
1. Involved in amino acid transport
The gamma-glutamine bonds contained in glutathione maintain the stability of the molecule and participate in the transport of amino acids.
2. Participate in cholic acid metabolism
Glycine and cysteine residues in glutathione can also participate in the metabolism of cholic acid.
3. Regulate your immune system
Glutathione plays an important role in the immune system's anti-infection and inflammation response, and plays an important role in the proliferation and normal function of lymphocytes.
4. Participate in insulin metabolism
Glutathione also reduces the activity of estrogen, prostaglandins, leucotrienes, and is involved in insulin metabolism.
Glutathione has a variety of important physiological functions and plays a key role in maintaining cell health, protecting the body from oxidative damage and detoxification.
