What is glutathione?

Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide consisting of glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine containing y-amide bonds and sulfhydryl groups, which is present in almost every cell of the body.

1. Eliminate free radicals

The cysteine residue in glutathione molecule has active sulfhydryl group (-SH), which is easily dehydrogenated by oxidation.

Under the action of glutathione peroxidase, glutathione is able to reduce hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) in the body to water (H₂O), while itself is oxidized to oxidized glutathione (GSSG).

Under the catalysis of glutathione reductase, GSSG can accept hydrogen reduction to glutathione, thereby continuously scavenging free radicals and protecting cells from oxidative damage.
